Brandability: what makes a name signal?
Great brand names are compression. They pack meaning, feeling, and category into two syllables and a rhythm you can say once and remember forever.
Five traits of a signal name
- Pronounceable on first read — no coaching required.
- Spellable over a phone call without letters.
- One dominant meaning, or a productive ambiguity (Apple = tech + fresh + simple).
- Rhythm — usually consonant/vowel alternation with a strong opening consonant.
- Distance from category clichés — Vault, not DataSecure.
The .com question
The .com premium isn't rational — it's Schelling. When users are unsure of the TLD they type .com first. Every non-.com brand loses a measurable percentage of direct-nav traffic. Whether that percentage matters depends on how much of your growth is direct-nav in the first place.
